Nigeria, Cyprus Move to Deepen Trade, Investment Ties

Nigeria and Cyprus have taken steps to strengthen diplomatic relations and expand economic cooperation following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

The ceremony took place on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, marking a new phase in efforts to strengthen engagement between Abuja and Nicosia across trade, investment, education and political dialogue.

Ufochukwu pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation during her tenure, with a focus on expanding commercial opportunities, strengthening educational exchanges and improving political relations between the two countries.

Welcoming the Nigerian envoy, Christodoulides acknowledged Nigeria’s role in promoting regional integration, economic development and stability in West Africa.

He reaffirmed Cyprus’s interest in building a stronger partnership with Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, identifying trade, investment, higher education and political dialogue as key areas for collaboration.

“Cyprus and Nigeria share ties of friendship born out of shared historical experiences, common principles, and enduring links between our peoples,” the Cypriot president said.

He also expressed his country’s readiness to work with Nigeria to address common global challenges through bilateral engagement and multilateral cooperation.

The renewed diplomatic engagement is expected to create opportunities for Nigerian businesses seeking access to Cyprus, while encouraging investment partnerships and expanding educational and professional exchanges between the two countries.

Following the presentation of her credentials, Ufochukwu is expected to engage Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora to explore practical ways of translating the renewed diplomatic commitment into economic and institutional cooperation.

The engagement comes as both countries seek to strengthen international partnerships and identify areas of mutual interest in trade, education and investment.
