Nigerian Government Deploys Passport Intervention Team to UK for Nigerians in Diaspora

The Nigerian Government has deployed a dedicated Passport Intervention Team to the United Kingdom to address pending passport applications and make the process easier for Nigerians living across the country.

The initiative, directed by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is part of efforts by the government to improve passport services and provide faster access to travel documents for Nigerians in the diaspora.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced the development in a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday.

According to the NIS, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has been directed to deploy the intervention team from the Service’s headquarters in Abuja to the UK.

The team is expected to arrive in the United Kingdom today, August 10, 2026, where it will work alongside the Nigerian High Commission to facilitate the processing and issuance of pending, new and renewal passport applications.

As part of the exercise, the team will also travel to designated cities across the UK to conduct passport enrolment and processing. The arrangement is intended to make the service more accessible to Nigerians who may otherwise have to travel long distances to complete their applications.

The intervention will cater to Nigerians with pending passport applications, first-time applicants and existing passport holders whose documents have less than one year remaining before expiration and who wish to renew them.

Applicants participating in the exercise are required to come with their completed passport application forms as well as proof of payment.

However, the NIS cautioned applicants against travelling to any location before the official schedule for the intervention is released.

The Service said details of the exercise, including the cities, dates, venues and enrolment times, would be communicated separately.

It advised Nigerians in the UK to closely monitor the official communication channels of the Nigerian High Commission for updates and further instructions.

The Immigration Service also assured Nigerians that its existing digital passport application platforms will continue to operate throughout the intervention.

This includes the Contactless Passport Application System, which allows eligible applicants to complete parts of the passport process digitally.

The NIS further confirmed that its passport home delivery service will remain available to applicants during the exercise.

The latest intervention comes as the Nigerian Government continues efforts to improve passport services for citizens living outside the country, particularly Nigerians who have experienced delays or difficulties accessing consular passport services.

The Immigration Service said the exercise reflects its commitment to providing “efficient, transparent and responsive passport service delivery to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.”

Nigerians in the UK are therefore advised to await the official release of the intervention timetable before visiting any designated enrolment centre.
