The devastated Nigerian family of a 16-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in a Lincoln lake have paid an emotional tribute to their “vibrant, energetic and unforgettable” son.
Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, known to family and friends as Tomiwa, died after he was pulled from Swanholme Lakes in Lincoln on July 9.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports that a teenager had got into difficulty in the water. Specialist rescue teams recovered Tomiwa from the lake around three hours later and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he died at 8.50pm that evening.
In a moving tribute released through Lincolnshire Police, his parents, Mr Abiodun Micheal and Mrs Tope Micheal, described their eldest son as a remarkable young man whose warmth, kindness and infectious smile left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
They said: “Tomiwa was a vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose presence illuminated every space he entered. His laughter, warmth and joyful spirit touched countless lives.”
As the eldest of four brothers, Tomiwa was described as a loving role model who embraced responsibility from an early age.
“He was a natural leader, a protector, a guide and a constant source of encouragement,” his family said. “His younger brothers adored him, and he cared for them with tenderness, always making them smile and supporting them in every way.”
His parents added that he was their “firstborn, our pride” and praised him for living with discipline, respect and integrity.
The teenager was known for his punctuality and attention to detail. Whether he was heading to school, football training or church, he was never late and always took pride in his appearance.
His family said he rarely left home without carrying a comb, a mirror or a hairbrush and was meticulous about personal hygiene, earning a reputation for always looking smart.
Friends also remembered Tomiwa as a sociable and compassionate teenager who made friends wherever he went.
“A true social butterfly, Tomiwa made friends effortlessly and was kind to everyone he met,” the tribute said. “He consistently sought the good of others and uplifted those around him.”
Football was one of the greatest passions in his life.
He represented both Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC and was known for his commitment, determination and enthusiasm, never missing training sessions or matches.
His family said football was far more than a hobby. It was something he pursued with dedication and purpose.
Alongside his love of sport, Tomiwa was deeply committed to his Christian faith.
He was an active member of his church’s youth ministry and regularly attended services and programmes. He also joined his school youth choir at the age of 16, with his family saying his faith shaped the way he treated others and guided every aspect of his life.
They said: “Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion. Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful. He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him.”
The family said they have found strength in their Christian faith as they mourn the loss of their son.
“The family takes solace in the Christian hope of the resurrection, believing that in God’s perfect time, we will meet again and part no more. Tomiwa will forever remain in our hearts.”
Lincolnshire Police continue to support the family following the tragedy, while Tomiwa’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends, teammates and members of the local community.
