The Zamfara State Police Command says it has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on armed banditry, following an operation that led to the neutralisation of a suspected bandit leader, the arrest of three suspects, and the recovery of firearms and motorcycles.
According to a statement issued by the Command, the operation was carried out on 9 June 2026 at about 6:30 p.m. by operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), led by the Divisional Police Officer of Bukkuyum Division, CSP Usman Halilu Modibbo.
Intelligence-Led Operation
Police said the team acted on credible intelligence and stormed suspected bandit hideouts located around the outskirts of Birisawa in Gummi Local Government Area of the state.
Upon arrival, security operatives engaged the armed suspects in a fierce gun battle.
During the exchange of fire, the leader of the gang was reportedly killed, while three other suspects were arrested at the scene.
Several members of the criminal group allegedly escaped into a nearby forest with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Weapons and Motorcycles Recovered
Following the operation, police said they dismantled the bandits’ camp and recovered five motorcycles and three firearms.
The Command described the development as part of ongoing efforts to deny criminal groups safe havens and disrupt their operations across the state.
Authorities confirmed that follow-up operations are underway to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The Zamfara State Police Command reiterated its commitment to sustained operations aimed at restoring peace and security across the state.
It said the ongoing campaign against armed groups will continue in coordination with the police headquarters in Gusau, with a focus on intelligence-driven raids and targeted interventions.
Police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar said the Command remains resolute in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and protect communities from further attacks.
