South Korea’s military has secured a North Korean soldier who crossed the heavily fortified border in the central front and reportedly expressed a desire to defect.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the soldier was safely taken into custody and transferred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.
“The relevant details are under investigation by the relevant agencies,” the JCS said in a brief statement.
Reports indicate that the soldier expressed an intention to defect to South Korea after crossing the border.
The incident marks the fourth reported defection since the administration of Lee Jae-myung took office and the second involving a North Korean soldier.
Similar cases have occurred in recent years. In October 2025, another North Korean soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the central front and was subsequently taken into South Korean custody after indicating a desire to defect.
South Korean authorities also recorded two civilian defections in 2025. One male civilian crossed the MDL in the midwestern sector in July, while another was rescued south of the maritime boundary in the neutral waters of the Han River later that same month.
Defections by North Korean soldiers are relatively rare due to the heavy military presence and strict security measures along the border. When such incidents occur, South Korean authorities typically conduct extensive interviews and security screenings before determining the individual’s future status.
Officials have not released further details about the latest case while investigations continue.
