Trump says Iran deal ‘very close’, calls for calm in Lebanon as negotiations progress

US President Donald Trump has said that a deal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving Iran is “very close,” expressing optimism that an agreement could be finalised soon. His remarks came amid conflicting signals from Tehran over the timing and progress of the proposed agreement.

Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, would reopen “to all” once the deal is signed. He also urged calm in Lebanon, where tensions linked to the wider regional conflict remain high.

Pakistan, acting as a mediator, said the agreement could be finalised within 24 hours and preparations were underway for an electronic signing. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei cautioned that while progress had been made, the exact timing of any signing remained uncertain.

In a post on social media, Trump maintained that the deal would be signed imminently and suggested that it would be followed by further steps addressing Iran’s nuclear programme. He also warned of unspecified consequences if negotiations failed to move forward smoothly.

Iran has repeatedly denied Western accusations that it seeks nuclear weapons, insisting its programme is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

While diplomatic discussions continue, details of the proposed agreement reportedly include easing regional tensions, reopening key shipping routes, and future talks on Iran’s nuclear activities. However, officials have noted that implementation would depend on compliance from all parties involved.
