US President Donald Trump has hailed the US South Korea alliance as a cornerstone of stability across the Indo-Pacific region, in a message marking the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice agreement, released on the 27th.
“Although more than 70 years have passed since the end of the war, the United States and South Korea remain united under a strong alliance forged through shared sacrifices and steadfast love for freedom,” Trump said. He added, “This bond is a pillar of peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific and a solemn promise to our Asian allies that we will stand together against the forces of evil and oppression threatening global peace.”
A Tradition Dating Back to Trump’s First Term
Trump first proclaimed “Korean War Veterans Armistice Day” during his first term in 2017 and has issued annual proclamations marking the occasion since. In this year’s message, Trump warned that what he described as communist ambitions to conquer the Korean Peninsula are now attempting to resurface in the West, but said US resolve remains unshaken.
“Communism is a fierce enemy of free citizens, and the administration will confront these threats with unwavering strength to defend freedom within and beyond the United States, ensuring that freedom triumphs over global tyranny,” Trump said. He went on to detail the sacrifices made by US forces during the Korean War, saying that with unparalleled power and indomitable resolve, the United States took up arms to prevent communism from dominating the free world. “Our republic will always remember the sacred truth that ‘freedom is not free,'” he added.
Bipartisan Resolution Honours Korean War Veterans
Separately, in the House of Representatives, Democratic Representatives Lois Frankel and Grace Meng, along with Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, introduced a bipartisan resolution commemorating the sacrifices and dedication of Korean War veterans on the armistice’s 73rd anniversary.
The lawmakers noted that the United States suffered 36,574 fatalities and 103,284 wounded during the Korean War, describing it as one of the most devastating conflicts in history. They added that many soldiers who served in the Korean War returned home without receiving the same welcome given to heroes of the First and Second World Wars. The resolution states that the House of Representatives honours the dedication and sacrifices of Korean War veterans and those who took part in the defence of South Korea.
