Ugandan authorities have dropped investigations into former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, months after she was reportedly placed under house arrest amid a corruption probe.
The development follows an announcement by Uganda’s military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who said President Yoweri Museveni had instructed him to release Among from house arrest.
In a social media post, Kainerugaba referred to the former speaker by her initials, “AAA,” and said: “We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her.”
Among was reportedly confined to her home in Kampala in May after authorities launched a corruption investigation that included the seizure of her Rolls-Royce.
However, a spokesperson for Uganda’s anti-corruption body told journalists that the agency had never confirmed that it was investigating Among.
“We have never stated anywhere that we are investigating Rt. Hon. Anita Among,” the spokesperson said.
Among became Speaker of Parliament in March 2022 and was regarded as a prominent figure within Museveni’s inner circle.
She has faced corruption allegations for several years, leading to sanctions imposed by both the United Kingdom and the United States.
The reported investigation had raised concerns over the growing influence of the military in Uganda’s political affairs.
