A United States humanitarian worker infected with the Ebola virus has been flown to Germany for specialised treatment as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to respond to a deadly Ebola outbreak.
The transfer comes just weeks after plans to establish a US linked Ebola treatment and research facility in Kenya were temporarily suspended by the High Court following a legal challenge.
US Ebola Patient Flown to Germany for Specialised Care
The American humanitarian worker arrived in Frankfurt before being transferred to Frankfurt University Hospital, where medical specialists are providing follow up treatment.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the patient had been working in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, which remains the centre of the current Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tedros said the WHO had closely monitored and cared for the patient before the transfer to Germany.
He confirmed that the patient was safely transported to continue receiving specialised medical care.
German health authorities also assured the public that the patient does not pose a risk to other hospital patients or the general population.
Officials said the United States requested Germany’s assistance because of the country’s experience in treating Ebola patients and its proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
DRC Continues to Battle Ebola Outbreak
The Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid May after health authorities confirmed cases linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
Unlike some other forms of Ebola, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo variant.
According to the WHO, the outbreak has resulted in more than 1,900 confirmed cases and over 700 deaths, making it one of the country’s most serious recent public health emergencies.
The latest patient transfer follows another case in which an American infected with Ebola was successfully treated in Berlin after spending two weeks in isolation.
Kenya’s Proposed Ebola Facility Faces Court Challenge
The outbreak has also renewed attention on plans to establish a US linked Ebola treatment and research facility in Kenya.
The proposed project, which was to be developed in partnership with American organisations, generated public debate after details of the initiative became public.
Kenya’s High Court has temporarily suspended the implementation of the project while it considers a petition challenging its legality.
The case remains before the court, and no final decision has been reached regarding the future of the proposed treatment and research facility.
International Cooperation Continues
Health authorities continue to monitor the Ebola outbreak closely as international partners work with the Democratic Republic of Congo to contain the spread of the virus.
The transfer of infected humanitarian workers to specialised treatment centres forms part of broader international efforts to ensure patients receive advanced medical care while supporting the ongoing response to the outbreak.
