US Issues ‘Do Not Travel’ Warning for 11 African Countries

The United States has warned its citizens against travelling to 11 African countries, placing them under its highest Level 4 travel advisory over security concerns, including terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict and civil unrest.

The affected countries are Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

The US Department of State said the advisories reflect serious security risks in the affected destinations, alongside concerns about crime and inadequate healthcare services.

The Level 4 classification, designated “Do Not Travel,” is the highest of the department’s four travel advisory levels and is issued for destinations where conditions could pose life-threatening risks to visitors.

According to the department, the security situation varies across the affected countries, with the nature and severity of the threats differing by location.

The advisories are therefore tailored to individual destinations, taking into account the prevailing security conditions and other risks travellers may encounter.

The US government also cautioned that its ability to provide emergency assistance to American citizens in some of the affected countries could be severely limited or unavailable.

The warning underscores the security and logistical challenges facing travellers to parts of Africa affected by insurgency, political instability, armed violence and weaknesses in essential services.
