The Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA) has thrown its support behind FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election next year.
Following a meeting in Jeddah on Thursday, the 22-member organisation said Infantino had contributed to strengthening unity within the global football community and expanding the reach of the sport worldwide.
The Gulf Football Federation, which represents eight national football associations, has also endorsed Infantino’s candidacy.
Infantino has faced growing criticism since July following a proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, which ultimately failed to gain approval.
His position came under further pressure on Wednesday when Switzerland, his home country, formally withdrew its support, citing concerns over integrity, accountability and transparency.
European football’s governing body, UEFA, has also been critical of Infantino and said it would put forward an alternative candidate before the November deadline.
The election, involving FIFA’s 211 member associations, is scheduled to take place in March.
