Two drones were spotted flying over a German military base in Mechernich, near Bonn, just days after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
The Bundeswehr confirmed that the drones were seen over the base on Thursday evening. The facility is reportedly used to store components and spare parts for US-made Patriot air-defence systems, which have become crucial to Ukraine’s defence against Russian missile attacks.
Military police were initially deployed to the site before the matter was handed over to local police for investigation. Growing security concerns The incident comes amid heightened concern in Germany over unexplained drone activity around sensitive sites.
Germany is still investigating how a drone carrying an explosive device managed to reach a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a facility used by the German military and NATO allies and also associated with Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Germany was increasingly experiencing what he described as “hybrid warfare”, adding that the country was not at war but was facing daily destabilising activity. German authorities have not said who was responsible for the Mechernich drone sightings. Russia has repeatedly denied accusations that it is behind suspicious drone activity in European airspace.
Why the Patriot facility matters Patriot systems are among Ukraine’s most important defences against Russian ballistic missiles. Ukraine has repeatedly asked its allies for additional interceptor missiles as its supplies become increasingly strained.
The latest drone incident therefore raises particular concern because the Mechernich facility reportedly stores equipment associated with Patriot systems.
European countries have previously experienced a series of suspicious drone sightings around military bases, airports and other critical infrastructure. The incidents have prompted discussions about stronger continent-wide counter-drone capabilities, including proposals for a European “drone wall.
“At this stage, however, German authorities have not publicly established a connection between the Mechernich sightings and the explosive device discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
