The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Thursday through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, June 12 remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who contributed to the return and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He also noted that efforts are ongoing to protect and reinforce democratic institutions in line with constitutional responsibilities.
Tunji-Ojo further assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, will continue to enhance internal security measures to safeguard lives and property nationwide, stressing that a peaceful environment is essential for sustaining democracy and national development.
He called on citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to national unity, civic responsibility, and respect for the law.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria’s history.
