Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says the country has the technological capability to develop missiles with significantly longer ranges, but that producing such weapons would require a political decision.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi made the comments in an interview with Iran’s official IRNA news agency on Tuesday.
Mohebbi said Iran would unveil weapons with new ranges, greater precision and increased destructive capability if it faced another confrontation.
He described the battlefield as the most effective environment for testing new weapons, without providing details about the systems Iran could potentially develop.
Mohebbi also claimed that Iran had recently tested a new missile against a US aircraft carrier and a warship, saying the missile struck the aircraft carrier at a range of about 500 kilometres.
He acknowledged that the strike did not disable the vessel but said it caused damage.
According to Mohebbi, Iran also maintains that the attack resulted in casualties, although the United States has not publicly reported such losses.
Earlier this month, Iranian officials said the country had carried out what they described as an “important attack” against a US vessel, presenting the action as a warning that a naval blockade could be challenged.
The latest statements come amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States over military and regional security issues.
