Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Durban, South Africa, on Wednesday as part of a nationwide demonstration against undocumented immigration.
The anti-migrant group March and March had designated September 30 as an unofficial deadline for undocumented immigrants to leave the country, with demonstrations held across several provinces.
South Africa has witnessed an intensifying anti-immigration campaign in recent months, accompanied by incidents of violence targeting foreign nationals.
Several immigrants have reportedly been killed, although the official death toll remains disputed by South African and foreign authorities.
More than 200,000 people have also left South Africa, according to an AFP tally based on figures released by African governments that have repatriated their citizens.
Protest organisers said Wednesday’s demonstrations were also aimed at drawing attention to gender-based violence, following a series of femicides that have generated widespread concern across the country.
The protesters vowed to continue their campaign, signalling that the September 30 deadline would not mark the end of their mobilisation.
