Tottenham Hotspur and Senegal midfielder Pape Sarr has been banned from driving for six months after he was caught speeding in a 20mph zone in north London.
The 24-year-old footballer was driving a Mercedes G Class AMG when the vehicle was recorded travelling at 25mph on Green Lanes, near Finsbury Park in Haringey, shortly after 2.30pm on February 23.
The incident occurred a day after Tottenham suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to north London rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Sarr later pleaded guilty to the speeding offence through the single justice procedure, which allows certain cases to be dealt with privately without the defendant appearing in open court.
At a hearing at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, magistrate David Marritt disqualified the Senegal international from driving for six months.
He was also ordered to pay a £666 fine, £130 in prosecution costs and a £266 victim surcharge.
Court documents showed that Sarr admitted to the Metropolitan Police that he was the driver when officers initially contacted him about the offence.
He had previously been given an opportunity to settle the matter with a fixed penalty in June, but failed to pay it. The unpaid penalty eventually led to the Metropolitan Police pursuing a criminal prosecution.
Sarr did not provide any mitigating circumstances when submitting his guilty plea and instead supplied the contact details of a Tottenham official as his point of contact.
The court documents did not state whether the midfielder already had penalty points on his driving licence.
The ban comes as London authorities continue to enforce the city’s extensive 20mph zones, with motorists facing fines, penalty points and, in some circumstances, disqualification for serious or repeated offences. Recent cases have also involved other prominent figures, including Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
Sarr joined Tottenham in 2021 and has made more than 100 appearances for the Premier League club. The Senegal international has also represented his country at the World Cup.
He was recently sent on loan to Juventus after losing his place in Tottenham’s midfield following the arrival of new players.
For now, however, the midfielder will have to leave the driving to someone else for the next six month.
