Senegal Postpones School Resumption After Deadly Flooding

Senegal has postponed the reopening of schools nationwide following heavy rainfall that triggered severe flooding in several parts of the country.

Torrential rains from Friday through Monday affected multiple regions and disrupted activities in parts of the capital, Dakar.

At least five people have reportedly died in the flooding, which comes just weeks before Senegal is scheduled to host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.

Authorities are working to clear flooded roads, restore traffic and protect critical water and electricity infrastructure, while emergency assistance is being provided to affected communities.

The Ministry of Education said the decision to delay the resumption of classes was primarily aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of children.

The postponement will also give authorities time to clean, disinfect and restore schools affected by the flooding before students return.

Primary and secondary schools, which were originally scheduled to reopen today, will now resume on October 12. The delay is considered unusual in recent years.

Weather forecasts indicate a high possibility of further rainfall in the coming days. Senegal’s rainy season typically begins in June and gradually ends in October.

The latest flooding has again highlighted the country’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall. In 2024, the Senegal River overflowed its banks, affecting more than 56,000 people in eastern Senegal.

Authorities are continuing efforts to mitigate the impact of the latest floods and prepare affected communities and public facilities for further rainfall.
